20 May , 2010
Almadén Mining Park amongst finalists for RegioStars 2010 Awards

The European Commission includes the Almadén Mining Park project amongst finalists for the RegioStars 2010 Awards, under the category of Innovative Use of Degraded Urban Areas. The winners were announced the 20 May in Brussels during the annual conference Regions for Economic Change.

The winners of RegioStars 2010 were announced the 20 May in Brussels during the annual conference, Regions for Economic Change.

Since 2008, the RegioStars Awards are given each year to the best and most innovative projects financed within the Regional Policy of the European Union, whose goal is to reduce development differences in the territory. All EU regions may compete with projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund, or the Cohesion Fund. This year, 87 projects were presented, selected from regions of the 27 member countries.

The objective of the RegioStars Awards is to identify good practises in regional development and to highlight original or innovative projects which may be attractive and inspire other regions.

The awards for Innovative Projects form part of the effort toward greater communication proposed in the communication policy regarding Regions for Economic Change (COM (2006) 675). This communication indicates that “Integral to the communication policy of Regions For Economic Change will be the creation of annual innovation awards for best projects in the area of selected themes linked to economic modernisation. These awards will improve information about good practice, stimulate the exchange of experience and provide visibility for progressive thinking.”

The European Regional Policy Commissioner, Mr. Johannes Hahn, said: “I am proud to present the finalists for the RegioStars Awards, who may serve as inspiration for other European regions. In addition to highlighting the tangible benefits for citizens in the regions, all finalist projects clearly demonstrate the important contribution made by the regional European policy to promote innovation, competition and social inclusion.".

The President of the Jury and member of the European Parliament, Jan Olbrycht, indicated that: “the record number of high-quality presentations this year demonstrates, in a convincing fashion, the important role of local and regional projects in fomenting innovation all over Europe. The finalists and winners are clear examples of how regions and cities can act as driving forces to achieve better quality of life for their citizens".

All EU regions were invited to present projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), the European Social Fund (FSE) or the Cohesion Fund after the 1 January, 2000. A total of 87 eligible petitions were presented by the 27 member countries, of which 24 projects were selected by the jury. The Almadén Mining Park was selected amongst the finalist projects.

With this award, the path begun by MAYASA in the year 2005 is reaffirmed, assuming environmental restoration of its facilities with the purpose of minimising the environmental effects of more than 2000 years of exploitation, as well as rehabilitation of the Almadén mines' historic heritage, preserving and guaranteeing its preservation, as well as procuring all of the means necessary so that this heritage is made known, visited and used by the greatest number of people.
